3. Trust Works Like a Bank Account

Trust is like a bank account…you have got to keep making deposits if you want it to grow. On occasion, things will go wrong, and you will have to make a withdrawal. Meanwhile, it is sitting in the bank earning interest.

Each time you do something to build trust, you put relational change into your pocket. Each time you do something negative, you spend some of that change. Do enough negative things…due to lack of character or competence…and you're bankrupt. And that spells the end of that relationship.

This dynamic works in every area of your life. If you spend all of your change with your colleagues at work, they no longer willingly work with you. If you spend all of your change with your boss, you end up looking for another job. If you spend all of your change with your friends, you spend a lot of time alone. If you spend all of your change with your spouse, you end up in a mess.  If this is a new concept to you, then you need to ask yourself some questions at the end of every day:

Am I making deposits? Think about your most important relationships. Are you exhibiting trustworthy behavior that's putting relational "money in the bank"?

• Am I making withdrawals? Have you undermined trust in any of those important relationships? If so, you need to try to make things right. Don't wait another minute to take the appropriate action by doing the following:

1. Apologize.

2. Ask yourself why you broke trust.

3. Correct the issue in your life.

4. Recognize that it takes longer to restore trust than to lose it.

5. Remember, trust is restored by ACTION, not just words.

Doing these things won't earn you new change, but it may stop you from losing more. And you just might save the relationship.
